Description:
Don Carlo, a prince of Spain, is in love with Elisabetta, a princess of France. However, due to political intrigue, she is married to Don Carlo's father, Philip II. Don Carlo cannot forget his feelings. His best friend Rodrigo encourages him. Don Carlo decides to turn his back on everything and help Rodrigo in his quest to "save Flanders from the tyranny of Spain. This is a betrayal of his country. And then there is Lady Eboli, who secretly loves Don Carlo. Love, friendship, and politics are all woven into this profound story. The first performance of "Don Carlo" was in French, but Verdi revised it many times, and several Italian versions exist. This video shows the 1884 Italian version used in the 2016 "Verdi Festival" performance at the Royal Theatre of Parma. The story is condensed and the music is denser, with major cuts from the first draft, including the exclusion of the ballet music. This is a perfect performance with excellent singers, especially the men by Bross, Stoyanov, and Pertusi, as well as Oehlen's conducting, which spins the music with full of dynamism. Naxos Japan
