Late 17th century Italian copperplate engraving. It is a Venetian portrait of a nun. The inscription reads, "
Unknown figure, representing a nun portrayed by Fiamengo in Casa Pamfilj Doria." It is plate 2 / 54. It is framed in a Sabina Faye Braxton gilded gaufrage technique on velvet. This technique derives from medieval embossing techniques of dusting embossed velvet in tarnished metals and suffusing the crushed pile with iridescent inks. This is the most elaborate and labor-intensive of techniques, capturing the essence of aging brocades, erosion, and patina. Each corner is decorated with an antique coordinating metal banding.
