Mugwort (artemisia princeps) has become one of the defining Korean calming ingredients, popularized by I'm From's Mugwort Essence. MISSHA's New Artemisia Calming Essence is the brand's take on mugwort skincare, delivering a high-concentration mugwort extract in a calming essence format. At $26.52 for 150ml, this is one of the best value mugwort essences on the market, compared to I'm From's 160ml at around $36.
Artemisia princeps has been used in Korean traditional medicine for centuries as a skin-calming and anti-inflammatory herb. Modern research confirms these effects: mugwort extract contains eupatilin and other bioactive compounds with measurable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. The "New" in the product name references MISSHA's reformulation, which increased the mugwort concentration and refined the essence texture.
High-concentration mugwort extract delivers eupatilin and artemisinin, which reduce inflammation and calm reactive skin. The essence format provides hydration while the primary actives do their calming work. Over 2 to 4 weeks of daily use, expect reduced redness, better tolerance of heat and sweat triggers, and stabilized sensitive skin. For acute flares (post-procedure, sunburn, rosacea flare-up), the calming effect is visible within 30 minutes of application.
Apply after toner in both morning and evening. Dispense 3 to 4 drops into palms and pat into skin. Layer 2 to 3 times during acute flares. Follow with moisturizer to seal. Can be applied to the entire face or spot-treated on reactive areas.
For flare management: keep in the refrigerator and apply cold compresses soaked in the essence to red, inflamed zones for 5 to 10 minutes.
Similar ingredient focus, different formulation. I'm From uses 100% mugwort extract with no added ingredients. MISSHA's formula adds panthenol and allantoin for enhanced calming effect. For purist single-ingredient approach: I'm From. For value and added calming actives: MISSHA.
MISSHA doesn't publish an exact percentage. Based on formulation review, it's in the 60 to 80% range of the aqueous phase, which is meaningful but lower than I'm From's 100%.
Moderately. Mugwort has a distinctive earthy-herbal scent. Most users acclimate or appreciate it; some find it strong initially.
Immediate: within 30 minutes of application for acute flares. Baseline stabilization: 2 to 3 weeks of daily use.
3 to 4 months of twice-daily use.
Pair with MISSHA Time Revolution The First Essence Enriched as the essence step, or use alone as both toner and essence for minimalist sensitive-skin routines.
