Prokofiev (1891-1953)
Description:
Prokofiev was five years old when he wrote his first piece. His mother transcribed the F-major piece into musical notation and gave it the name "Indian Gallop. Prokofiev continued to demonstrate his talent, and is credited with two operas before the age of 10. Prokofiev did not learn to compose in earnest until he was 11 years old. His first teacher, Pomerantsev, did not bring him any useful information, but his next teacher, Glière, guided Prokofiev with a deft hand. He wrote the delightful series of "Manuscripts" included on this album, and with this achievement he was admitted to the St. Petersburg Conservatory at the young age of 13. To get an idea of just how good this collection is, compare it with two collections he composed as a young man, "The Story of an Old Grandmother" and "Six Pieces," and you will hear how well established his own style was as a teenage Prokofiev.
