Hel en vagevuur (deel linksonder), 1612
Jacques Callot
This is the fourth segment (bottom left) of a depiction of Hell as a fortified, step-like pyramid. At the very top, Satan devours the souls of sinners, while many damned souls are tormented by demonic creatures and fires on the layers beneath him. In the bottom left corner outside the pyramid, devils ferry new souls by boat. Throughout the artwork, explanatory Latin texts detail various sins. Below the scene, part of the Medici coat of arms and an enclosed Italian text can be found.
