The stock ratchet pawl used from 1980 to 2000 utilized scissor spring that was well known for breaking. The unfortunate side effect of this failure is the broken spring leg going through the transmission and destroying it. Our new ratchet pawl utilizes a rectangular cross-section spring like the 21st century Big Twins.
*For the 2000-2006 Softail, 2001-2005 Dyna, 2002-2006 FL 555-56LD-A pawl, you will also need an eccentric screw (PN 152-56B) and nut (PN 70813). Whenever replacing your ratchet pawl, we recommend replacing the seal (PN12045) snap ring (68010) and washer (6497HW) as well.
*2000-2006 Softail, 2001-2006 FL, and 2001-2005 Dyna customers with an OEM setup must purchase PN 172-5-A with the 555-56LD-A pawl.

Benefits
Each time an upshift or downshift is made the pawl spring is cycled. After many cycles, the spring leg breaks. The unfortunate side effect of this failure is the broken spring leg going through the transmission gears and wrecking the transmission. Any seasoned mechanic has seen this happen. With the heavy-duty cross section spring in the ratchet pawl, we have eliminated this issue.
