A magical Islamic gold and moonstone stirrup ring dating from the 12th century Seljuk Dynasty. The truncated conical bezel is set with a natural bright white moonstone cabochon held in place by 14 wedge-shaped prongs soldered against the outside of the high karat gold bezel.

The exterior of the ring is richly adorned with finely engraved circles containing swirling bands of trefoils and arabesque motifs. The hollow shank, of semi-circular cross section tapers towards the back. Upon closer inspection the exterior of the ring has traces of red enamel or wax.

The Seljuks, a Turkish dynasty of Central Asian nomadic origins, became the new rulers of eastern Islamic lands following the defeat of the powerful Ghaznavids at the Battle of Dandanakan (1040). Under the Seljuk sultanate, which spanned from the 11th to the 13th century, goldsmiths and jewellers created works of unparalleled beauty and sophistication. Seljuk jewellery was known for its intricate patterns, delicate filigree work, and use of precious gemstones. It was also prized for its symbolic significance, as jewellery was often used to convey messages of wealth, power, and status.

UK size M 1/2/US size 6.5, 2.35g high karat gold tested as 18K. Moonstone measures 6mm x 4mm x 3mm. This ring is in good and wearable overall condition despite its immense age, the stone is securely set, there is some surface age-related wear and denting to the hollow body with one fine crack to the visible upon magnification. The stone is foil-backed and is a later replacement.
