An enchanting European 15th-16th century gold ring set with a garnet, circa 1500.
The carbuncle garnet is cut en cabochon and is tightly rub-over set in a bezel setting of a conical shape. The underside of the bezel with a quatrefoil motif and a pierced centre. The high carat gold hoop is of a circular cross-section and has an elongated oval shape.
In Medieval times, gemstones were considered to have amuletic and talismanic powers. Medieval lapidaries index the abilities of gems to cure ailments, ward off sickness, or even bring prosperity, love, or victory. Garnets were believed to promote good health and ward off demons and were often worn for protection from the Black Death. Garnets were also worn by the clergy who valued garnets as symbols of Christ's blood and sacrifice.
UK size R 1/2, US size 9, 1.88g, tests as high carat gold, approx. 18K-20K. The garnet weighs 1.56ct.
The garnet is original and remains unchanged. The surface of the stone has been well worn causing the garnet to appear slightly dull, however the surface could easily be polished by a local jeweller to reveal the red glow underneath if desired. The ring is in very good wearable condition despite its immense age - a real rarity!
