Decoration: Indigo blue transfer on white. Central motif is the breast star of the Order of the Star of India, encircled by a stylised collar/chain and rope border.
Date & marks: Backstamped Wedgwood & Co., with a British Registry mark dated 20 December 1861. The Order of the Star of India was instituted on 25 June 1861, and this pattern was produced to commemorate it.
Historical context: Pieces in this pattern were offered through the Army & Navy Stores for diplomatic and military establishments across the British Empire. A set of similar dessert plates by Spode was presented to Queen Victoria by the Brigade of Guards.
Condition: Good antique condition overall; light brown spotting at the rim and minor glaze/transfer irregularities consistent with age and production. Presents beautifully.
Use & care: Display or light service; hand-wash only, no dishwasher or microwave.
